Dwayne Johnson could soon have an association with non-league Southend United, and judging by the former wrestler's net worth, it's something for the Shrimpers to get excited about.
America can't get enough of non-league football these days. Just ask fans of Wrexham football club. The Red Dragons have stepped out of the wilderness after Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the North Wales club in 2021 and completely transformed their fortunes.
Fast forward two years and an initial investment of £10milloin has seen Wrexham finish the season as National League champions, returning to the Football League for the first time in 15 years and it's all thanks to their trans-Atlantic celebrity owners.
But Wrexham isn't the only traditional football club catching the eye stateside. Part of the club's recent success and surge in US appeal is apportioned to the hugely popular Netflix documentary 'This is Wrexham' and now it appears that another renowned Hollywood actor wants a slice of the action.
News broke on Friday that Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, who was the highest-grossing male actor in the world in 2020 - not to mention a former WWE champion - is interested in using his own production company to make a fly-on-the-wall series following struggling Southend United.
But the deal will only likely come to pass if the Integral Sports Management (ISM) consortium completes a successful takeover of the financially-ruined South East club.
Should the Shrimpers manage to get all their ducks in a row, however, they could end up in an unexpected association with one of the biggest names in world entertainment and a quick look at his credentials confirms that the fifth-tier club would be rubbing shoulders with celebrity royalty.
With a current net worth of $800m (according to Celebritynetworth), Johnson makes an honest living from movies, TV shows, his own business and endorsement projects and still occasionally professional wrestling.
Last year alone, he banked an eye-watering $270m, making him the fourth highest-paid entertainer on the planet. One of his business enterprises is a television company called Seven Bucks Productions and it is through this operation that he is interested in working with lowly Southen United.
All that wealth means The Rock doesn't have to live modestly and that is reflected by the six-bedroom Beverly Park mansion he bought from Paul Reiser for $27.8m in 2021. The 17,630 square-foot gated residence boasts 11-and-a-half bathrooms, a tennis court and a baseball diamond.
Should he decide to take the dog for a walk, he could bump into one of his neighbours, including Denzel Washington, Sylvester Stallone, Rod Stewart or Eddie Murphy.
Americans like their cars and Johnson is no different. His collection of nine supercars is worth $5.1m, including a $2.6m Pagani Huayra, a Ferrari LeFerrari and a Lamborghini Huracan, not to mention a $300,000 Rolls Royce Wraith.
Should the Southend players grow tired of long midweek trips to Gateshead, they could always utilise Johnson's $65m Gulfstream G650 private jet to cut down on travel time.
It remains to be seen whether ISM's proposed takeover of Southend makes it over the line and a new relationship with one of the biggest stars in Hollywood actually becomes a reality. But judging by the success of their rivals Wrexham, it's safe to imagine that the Shrimpers like the smell of what The Rock is cooking.
