Last year, Margot was recognised by SAG for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in the historical film, Mary Queen Of Scots.

Her nomination, which was announced in December 2018, came as a surprise as many critics had panned her performance.

A New York Post film critic wrote: 'Margot Robbie chooses lame self-righteousness over drama, and shoves it in our faces for two hours. It's a royal chore.'

A movie reviewer for The Guardian also wrote: 'Robbie... never really convinces with the accent or the appearance and one can almost feel her focusing on both so much that she forgets to add much else to the role.'

They added that Margot's role in the film was 'a glaring miscast' that brought down the overall quality of the production.

Margot herself previously told the BBC she believed she was not the right actress for the role.

The Oscar nominee said she told the film's director Josie Rourke: 'I'm not the right actress for this. I didn't go to university, I don't have a degree, I didn't do theatre, I'm not classically trained, I learned on the job.'

Apparently, Josie was unconcerned and replied: 'I don't want you to play a queen, I want you to play a young woman.'

She added: 'That unblocked the character for me in a big way, and from then it was really [about] finding her humanity and finding her vulnerable place beneath the facade.'
