SELENA Gomez ran the risk of ruining her beautiful white gown at the Met Gala as she overloaded on bronzer on Monday night.

But fans on social media questioned whether her make-up artist had gone a little OTT with the bronzer brush, resulting in her face looking much more tanned than her body.

One Twitter user said: "what happened to Selena Gomez's tan who let her leave the house like this".

Another wrote: "What’s going on with Selena Gomez’s spray tan / bronzer situation here??? Someone needs to be fired for letting her leave like this".

Someone else pleaded: "@selenagomez Please hire a new makeup and hair artist for next year".

Others thought she looked "breathtaking" exactly one year on from her debut on the very same red carpet with ex-boyfriend The Weeknd.

A social media user said: "SO SO SO SO SO BEAUTIFUL @selenagomez".

Another tweeted: "Selena Gomez looks breathtaking at the #MetGala."

Her stylist, Kate Young, posted a picture of the star on Instagram earlier in the evening.

Speaking to People, she said: “She’s wearing lots of diamonds because I thought they were the best physical manifestation of the theme — eternal, heavenly.

“I love the lace and embroidery, but my most favourite are the Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger rings!”

Fans questioned whether she would bring on-off boyfriend Justin Bieber to the Gala after the pair reconnected following her split from The Weekend.

But the pair have reportedly cooled things off, with a source telling the magazine: “They weren’t getting along and decided to take a break."

It didn't seem to faze the former Disney star, who was seen embracing Gigi Hadid on the red carpet before stopping for a snap with new mum Kylie Jenner.

They were joined by a whole host of famous faces at the annual event.

From saints to sinners, guests took the 2018 theme of Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination very seriously.

Pop singer Rihanna, one of the co-hosts of the evening, dressed like a pope, sporting a head-turning, jewel-encrusted miter with matching mini-dress with a priestly-style cape designed by Maison Margiela.

Singer Katy Perry wowed in enormous, feathered white wings resembling an archangel over a Versace gold mini-dress paired with thigh-high gold boots.

The invitation-only Met Gala is a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and also marks the opening of the Costume Institutes annual fashion exhibition.
